…va mai aduceti aminte ce va spuneam la terminarea semestrului? Ei bine, semestrul s-a incheiat, notele au fost postate, studentii nu mai au nimic nici de castigat, nici de pierdut. Dar unii dintre ei continua sa-mi scrie. Redau mai jos cateva emailuri, fara modificari.
I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed your class this semester
and learned a lot. I hadn’t previously taken any political philosophy
courses, but after this one, I am certainly interested in doing so. As a
student I found it both accessible and informative, a balance that many
teachers fail to establish. I know that it’s always nice to hear someone
tell you that they think you are doing a good job and, so I wanted to let
you know that I certainly think you are doing so. Again, thank you for
teaching this course and, more importantly, doing a tremendous job in the
process.

I was in your Y383 foundations in American political thought class this
fall, and recently I’ve been thinking about the notion of ‘rights’ that we
discussed from time to time. This may seem weird, but I can’t pinpoint
exactly what a ‘right’ actually is. I have a notion that many people think
they know what rights are, but they actually don’t. I was wondering if you
could tell me what a ‘right’ properly is.
My thoughts are these:
– There is no such thing as a ‘natural right,’ they are bestowed upon
individuals from a certain authority. That authority then protects those
rights, but it also has the power to take away those rights. Therefore, the
‘erasability’ of a right is part of what makes it a right.
– I hear some claiming that healthcare should be a right. But how can
something that requires an outside force to execute be a right? For this
„right” to be effected, a doctor would have to be summoned, or forced into
action. Theretically, a doctor’s freewill could be restricted if he is
forced to perform healthcare on somebody. I think of rights as restraining
forces, holding someone or something (like government) back- preventing them
from interfering where they shouldn’t. Rights don’t include entitlements to
goods. Entitlement is different than right.
I’m not really sure how these thoughts tie together, or if they do at all. I
could be way off base in my thinking, which I’ve been doing a lot of
(inspired by your class). I was wondering if I could get your thoughts on
the subject, if you are willing to take the time.

@ laura – inca nu i-am raspuns. Acu’ am luat o pauza de la gospodarire si ma pregatesc s-o fac.
@ davidv – sunt copii care nu s-au mai ciocnit niciodata in acest fel, brutal, cu ideile (da’ sati linsitit, il mai calmez eu cu HC:). Ma bucur cand incep sa-i faca sa le simta concretetea. Nu le-am sters numele din lene si pentru ca e blog „de casa”, romanesc. Nu-l citesc ei:))) Craciun fericit!

Ce-ar fi sa alegi urarea pe care ai primi-o cu drag: pe aceea ti-am trimis-o. (Nici asa nu stiu ce ti-am dorit, dar macar am nimerit bine.)
Frumoase confesiunile studentilor tai, doar ingerul poate sa-i invete tu poti doar sa-i faci sa gandeasca, si nu-i usor lucru.

Si eu zic sa le stergi numele sau sa le ceri voie sa le postezi comentariile. Poate ca nu-l citesc dar multi isi googleaza numele personal si cind il vad alaturi de comentarii in romana pe care nu le inteleg s-ar putea sa fie „uncomfortable”. Ziceai de avocati ca au ajuns o casta aparte… un incident ca asta i-ar da unuia de mincare pe vreo doua saptamini.
